BEHIND THE MAN
Why do you make music?
I make music because I feel the need to express, create, and explore sound, along with lyrics. To me music is a necessity in my life, without it I struggle to express things that words can not. Music says words that don't even exist in any language. It's also about the moment. Music captures the mood and texture of surroundings or a specific moment. The same song never sounds the same at ever concert because the artist's emotions are implanted in that moment, along with the room and crowd's vibe. It is truly a special thing that brings us together for a unique experience, look at Woodstock of ’69 as an example.
Who influences you?
The blues are my roots and continues to influence me even in other genres. Artists like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Johnson, Jack White, Son House, and other great blues artists inspire me to expand what I already have and what has been done. I would say my lyrics are more inspired by people like: Jim Morrison, Edgar Allen Poe, Mars Volta, The Beatles, and Anthony Kiedis. Of course there are more artists that inspire me to do things and the number will grow undoubtedly with my age. Local Artists though are probably most influential, because you see people from the same vicinity doing what you love and being successful/happy. Also with local/underground artist there is more of a personally connection and interaction.
How do you tell if your music is good?
A sense of euphoria overwhelms you, you tend to play more aggressively; really any song that conveys emotion to you or your someone else. You may repetitive keep listening to the song because you’re so astounded by the final product you’ve created. There are times when you doubt your work or feel it isn't to par, but usually the worst critic an artist has is themselves. I think though you should be satisfied with what you create, it all depends on your motive. To me it really is not about numbers, money, popularity, being on key, or even following structure. Good music conveys emotion and it express what the artist wants it to.
When was the first time you knew you wanted to make music?
The first time I was really drastically inspired to make music was after listening to a Stevie Ray Vaughan song where you could hear his raw energy and emotion from the way he played guitar. It was a wow moment where I knew I had to learn to play. I probably wore that CD out from listening to it so much, it's mesmerizing music. Then watching him play took it to another level for me, just seeing the effect and power of music that was emulating from Stevie. Ever since then I have been more and more falling in to the musical experience.
What are your current projects? What do you intend to do with your future?
I've been talking to a few people on the topic of collaborating and starting a group. There is a real good chance of an electronic pop or dance style group fronted by a female friend, possibly something like Purity Ring. Trevor the Kid and I are going to be making a new track. I'm not going to say an EP this year, but definitely some singles and some performances around the cities. Right now, I'm trying to really focus on lyrics and getting some new material.
